Robert Cray - 34 years of Young Bob

Just one track each from 19 albums...I've always said this would result in a strong comp and it has. The fun thing is that Gus could do the same thing tomorrow and come up with a different, but equally good volume 2. It is an interesting way to listen to his body of work.

One thing that is clear to me is that he shares much more with the Southern Soul of ZZ Hill, OV Wright, and Little Johnny Taylor, than with the Blues of the Kings or even the Texas guys.

...pssst,   gus has added a volume 2, so now there are 40 tracks!

A good selection KC many of which I would concur...But there are so many good tracks (among some that are good filler) I may have a response for a Vol 2 as suggested by pmac using the same concept - Meanwhile check the comp I emailed you
Cheers guys

Robert Cray is my favourite contemporary Blues artist (the late SVR and Keb Mo are also my heroes) : Vocals 10 out of 10 same with his guitar ...Only some of the songs have had my lower rating...but never his performances. Here is my Vol 2 of KC's appreciation compilation ...I spent some hours on this and several of KC's choices of best of album track coincided with mine So I pulled the best or 2nd choice when needed...All tracks from my CDs...No art...but info in the text re album source.

Some nice choices, KC and GG! A few other all-time favorites of mine are I Slipped Her Mind and Porch Light from False Accusations and the title track from I Was Warned.

If I misread one of the favourite titles listed by Preslives as "I Slipped Her Mine", does this constitute a Freudian slit?

Thanks Pres
Almost every track from RC's first 5/6 albums are great...some later albums disappoint in song choice..but even the weakest is played well ...I Love this guy...His Bad Influence album was for me a great morale booster as was Texas Flood by SRV and Keb Mo was to my heart

Great stuff guys! I've been re-evaluating Cray in general over the last couple of years, and he's climbed considerably in my personal polls. Both volumes are well-selected and make for a great listen.

What does that mean -- 'join the Bluesnik crew'?

Just means stick around like the regulars here (Blues lovers)

I do check in here fairly often, and have for a couple of years now. I generally only comment on things that I actually download and listen to (which isn't everything). But thanks for the invitation. ;-)

Many thanks for this collaboration, le Roi and Gus! When he first appeared, I was blown away by Cray but then thought he began treading the same ground for a few years; that is, until I really began listening to him again. I think your description nailed it, le Roi; his voice strikes me as more soul-influenced than many of the blues singers to whom I listen. I have been reassessing his work in the past few years in no small part to Gus' comments on this blog and am glad that Cray is still fairly young, healthy, and, from all indications, will be with us for a few more years yet. The past few have been a bit rough for us blues fans and I am so glad that Cray, Mo', Mahal, Davis, Taylor, Bibbs, Ms. Copeland, and others are so dedicated to preserving the best of the genre while taking it in new directions.
